About the film
Makante Achchan revolves around Viswanathan (Sreenivasan), a tough, uncompromising, honest and straightforward village officer, happily living with his family consisting of his wife Rema (Suhasini) and two children. His only aim in life is to make his teenage son Manu (Vineeth Sreenivasan) an engineer. Vishvanathan spends a lot of money on his son’s coaching, who has already failed in the entrance test once. Contrary to his father’s wishes, Manu aspires to become a singer and participate in TV reality shows.
They often mock each other but once it goes overboard and Manu walks out of the house to prove himself, before his father. Finally, Viswanathan reconciles to the fact that his son will never be an engineer!
About the characters
Makante achan is a movie, which is primarily focusing on family spectators and its casting coup made in the form of immensely talented Sreenivasan and his son Vineeth Sreenivasan, that too in the company of ever fabulous Suhasini Maniratnams .sreenivasan performed well as a typical keralite parent who always believes that securing high ranks in various entrance tests hold the key to their children’s success.
It’s wonderful to see actress Suhasini back in Malayalam after a while, but her role is almost wasted as she remains a mere spectator in the fireworks between the father and son. Vineeth sreenivasan represents the today’s young generation, who believes that they have the freedom to choose their carrier. Jagathy as Himaval Chaithanya, Salim Kumar as Krishnankutty and all the others in the cast have done justice to their respective characters.
About the direction
Director V.M. Vinu, one of the successful filmmakers in Malayalam for the last two decades. His latest offering Makante Achchan, exceeds our expectations and is truly watchable. V M Vinu in direction and Manoj Pillai’s cinematography has almost succeeded to make the movie an above average affair. Unfortunately, the director has no new story to tell and is recycling his old father-son relationship plots.
The down point of the movie is the climax portions which are clichéd and melodramatic. There is little to mention about the technical aspects. Cinematography, art-direction and editing are all in sync with the theme and the mood. The true brilliant part of the movie is its dialogues by Samjad Narayanan which is crisp and cleverly articulated.
